Ode to Baby

I'm back at work today. It's slow this morning, and that's a good thing.

If today was Wednesday again, I might have ran away from work. Just straight up awoled like a crazy lady.

Wednesday, 4 month old baby died. He was a beautiful 4 month old baby. Parents found him not breathing in his crib- SIDS. Mom and Dad were of course shocked, falling to the floor in grief. I had to ask them dumb questions while they were still in shock so I could fill out the death certificate. They told me what baby was like. He was a good sleeper. He was their only baby. He liked to be surprised by funny noises- he would smile. He was beautiful, even after life left him.

So, God, please take care of baby. And Mom and Dad, I will think of you on mother's day and father's day and a lot of other days 'cause some things will feel unbearable.

Back to work I am. And peaceful and ready to be here.

  1. Thanks for sharing Tessa. I don't think I'm cut out to be a social worker anymore. I can't even imagine what you and especially the parents felt.

  2. wow. it takes someone as special as you to deal with something like this. i remember doing an internship at an elementary school with a school counselor and going home in tears every time. thanks for being who you are because someone has to do the this tough job. thanks for those kind words about the parents and baby. as a parent it touched my heart! love ya!
